We’ve had some ups and downs in taking on the climate crisis this month.

Together we helped stop more mining ([link removed]) from going ahead in Wales’s last open cast coal mine. But then yesterday the Rosebank oil field got the green light ([link removed]) .

Our lawyers also requested an urgent response ([link removed]) from government following the Prime Minister’s roll-back of crucial climate commitments last week. Our climate campaigner Danny has debunked the PM’s sometimes bizarre speech in this magazine piece ([link removed]) .

Even before Rishi Sunak took an axe to green policies last week, he was busy trying to revive the dying fossil fuel industry.

Lough Neagh is a toxic soup

Across the water in Northern Ireland, Lough Neagh is choking with thick mats of toxic blue-green algae.

The UK’s largest fresh water lake – the size of the Isle of Wight – is at the heart of Northern Ireland. It provides over 40% of drinking water to residents and a home to diverse wildlife.

But pollutants from farmland run-off have caused dangerous levels of blue-green algae to take over. Killing birds, fish, and even pet dogs.

The local community is demanding action. A wake for Lough Neagh highlighted the urgent need to save it. And people across the Irish Sea are paying attention too.

Timber giant drops lawsuit against campaigners

I’ve got some great news from Malaysia. Timber conglomerate Samling has dropped its legal case against campaigners from Sarawak trying to protect the rainforest.

Campaign group SAVE Rivers had revealed Samling’s destruction of primary rainforest on indigenous lands. But Samling tried to silence them with a defamation lawsuit – a so-called SLAPP (strategic lawsuit against public participation).

We supported the #StopTheSLAPP campaign alongside other allies around the world. Together we wrote to Samling’s CEO and shared solidarity photos on social media. And it worked – Samling caved in.
This is a huge win for forest defenders. Thank you to everyone who supported this campaign. It just goes to show the power that international solidarity can have.

We have a new exhibition in Cornwall showcasing the history of Friends of the Earth campaigns – featuring photographs, props and publications.

The exhibition, called “Transforming Tomorrow: Friends of the Earth's ongoing battle for climate justice”, is at Kurt Jackson Foundation in St. Just, Cornwall and is running until 24 February 2024.
