Hi John, Matt here – Callie's husband. I wanted to give you a behind-the-scenes look at a day in the life of a Congressional Candidate. The truth is, running for office isn't glamorous. It means a lot of nights on the road (especially in a district as big as ours) crushing energy drinks and jerky sticks, and a lot of time watching Callie on the phone talking to local leaders and potential donors. Sometimes we have to get dressed and attend events:
Other times we’re like this - passed out in the car getting a nap in before a parade.
But every day, I watch Callie jump into her to-do list with determination – because this fight matters… It's the same energy that drove her to become a veterans’ advocate when I came home from Iraq and couldn't get the care I needed – and the same energy that propelled her through law school while raising two small girls. I know that there's no challenge Callie can't overcome when she sets her mind to it – but she can't do it alone.
Another campaign secret that I only recently learned: End-of-Quarter filings really do matter. Before Callie entered this race, I assumed that all donations were equal – $5 today was just as good as $5 next week, or the week after. But the truth is, having a strong quarterly filing is one of the most important things a campaign can do to set itself up for success. Everyone from journalists to opponents to potential endorsers will read these reports when assessing whether Callie is a serious threat to Rep. Bergman. (She is.)
