Tim Scott tells voters "Great Society" welfare programs were worse for Black Americans than slavery — seriously
A lot of deplorable things were said during the GOP debate on Wednesday night, but South Carolina's Tim Scott won first prize for his mind-numbingly stupid hot take on welfare assistance and the introduction of America's transformational social safety net in the 1960s. “Black families survived slavery! We survived poll taxes and literacy tests. We survived discrimination being woven into the laws of our country. What was hard to survive was [Lyndon] Johnson’s Great Society, where they decided to put money — where they decided to take the Black father out of the household to get a check in the mail,” Scott said out loud with a straight face in front of television cameras and an audience full of people with eyes and ears. GOP rivals jockey for a distant 2nd place in debate dominated by the one candidate not on stage — Donald Trump
The absence of the disgraced ex-president played a central role in the second Republican primary debate of the 2024 election season, as seven floundering White House hopefuls tried and mostly failed to shake up a race in which Trump remains the clear frontrunner. With their primary hopes dwindling, the presidential wannabes shouted over each other, as the evening devolved into incomprehensible crosstalk filled with half-baked zingers and failed Republican policies.

Open Democracy exposes MAGA plot to steal 2024 election
Open Democracy PAC: MAGA extremists know they can't win the election fair and square — which is why they're enacting a devious plan to put their specially chosen stooges in key battleground state positions, like the County Commissioner in Bucks County, PA, in order to overturn the election on behalf of Donald Trump. The Open Democracy PAC is fighting back to make sure they don't succeed, but they'll need your help. Will you chip in to help protect our democracy from the latest MAGA election steal plot?
Chris Christie slams "Donald Duck" Trump for skipping GOP debate again
The former New Jersey governor and one-time Trump ally eviscerated the disgraced ex-president, accusing the serial grifter of being afraid to defend his record and “ducking” his party opponents. “Donald, I know you’re watching. ... You’re not here tonight — not because of polls and not because of your indictments — you’re not here because you’re afraid of being on this stage and defending your record," Christie said. Standing by for a measured response from Donald that will surely in no way invoke Christie's weight or physical appearance... [RETWEET THAT!]

"Doesn't make a damn bit of difference": Trump belittles UAW strike in speech at nonunion plant
The serially indicted con man used his speech — at a nonunion plant in Clinton Township, Michigan — to simultaneously posture as a lifelong champion of workers and denigrate the United Auto Workers' historic strike against the Big Three US car manufacturers, dismissing the union's righteous fight for better wages and benefits as effectively meaningless. UAW president Shawn Fain pre-empted the disgraced ex-president's ballyhooed speech, flatly stating, "I don't think the man has any bit of care about what our workers stand for, what the working class stands for. He serves the billionaire class, and that's what's wrong with this country."

Landmark cannabis banking bill scores a win
A landmark federal bill that would protect banks that work with cannabis companies appears headed to the Senate floor after passing out of committee on Wednesday with bipartisan support. Since marijuana is legal in some states, but still incomprehensibly illegal at the federal level, the industry has long struggled to gain access to financial services — instead many business owners are forced to deal with the inconveniences and dangers of transacting in all-cash.
Kevin McCarthy still lacks votes for GOP stopgap, increasing odds of a shutdown
The impressively ineffectual House speaker lacks the votes to pass his latest hare-brained idea for a short-term spending bill, signaling a shutdown entirely of the Republican Party's making is all but inevitable. McCarthy is expected to pair a stopgap funding bill with draconian spending cuts and a sweeping GOP border bill to placate radical, right-wing holdouts on Friday, but enough bozos in the burn-it-down clown caucus oppose any so-called continuing resolution and have vowed to block its passage.

Gen. Mark Milley taking "safety precautions" after Trump suggested he deserves execution
Milley, the outgoing chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has been forced to take appropriate measures to ensure his safety and that of his family after the serially indicted, disgraced ex-president attacked the country's top military leader by casually suggesting he is a traitor who deserves to be executed. Let that sink in for a moment. None of this is normal.
Federal judge declines to recuse herself from Trump election interference case
US District Judge Tanya Chutkan summarily rejected the serial grifter's request that she recuse herself from overseeing his upcoming federal conspiracy trial, ruling Trump failed to show her previous comments about his role in the failed insurrection meant she could not be impartial. Tsk, tsk. Better luck next time, Donnie.
Biden administration rolls out new rules to make foster care with family easier, provide protection for LGBTQ+ children
In a most-welcomed development, the Biden administration is moving to make it easier for caregivers to take in family members in the foster care system, requiring states to provide them with the same financial support that any other foster home would receive. The White House also proposed a new regulation aimed at ensuring that LGBTQ+ children are protected in their foster homes from mistreatment due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. Don't let anyone tell you elections don't matter! This is compassionate, common-sense leadership, and we need plenty more of it.
