DEED and CareerForce are putting a spotlight on Manufacturing employment in October, highlighting the importance of this critical industry. People working in Manufacturing in Minnesota made an average annual wage of $76,950, which is 10% higher than the state?s overall average private sector wage. Central Minnesota Blog [ [link removed] ]

Home to 1,200 manufacturers who provide nearly 41,500 jobs, Central Minnesota is a powerhouse in the goods-producing space. Manufacturing continues to grow and now accounts for over 15% of all employment in the region, plus provides average annual wages that are $10K higher than typical in the region. In fact, more wages are paid out from manufacturers than any other industry in the region, a whopping $2.65 billion in 2022.

The presence and importance of manufacturing to the?Seven-County Metro Area's labor market [ [link removed] ]?and economy cannot be understated. In 2022, the Metro Area had over 4,000 Manufacturing establishments supplying nearly 175,000 covered jobs. As such, Manufacturing was the region's second largest-employing industry sector, accounting for one-in-ten jobs, and the Metro Area accounts for over half (53.9%) of Minnesota's total Manufacturing employment.

The Manufacturing sector in Northeast Minnesota produces a varying array of goods including everything from airplanes to paper and?beverages, [ [link removed] ]?accounting for 8,930 jobs across 338 establishments in the first quarter of 2023. That was good for 6.2% of all employment in the region, making Manufacturing the sixth largest sector out of 20. Manufacturing jobs paid an average annual wage of $68,480 in 2022, about $14,000 per year above the all-industry average.

In terms of the number of jobs, Manufacturing is the second largest industry sector in Northwest Minnesota and statewide. Manufacturing accounts for 13.5% of Northwest jobs, a greater percentage than Minnesota's 11.3%. Manufacturing's impact is even more pronounced in terms of wages, paying out 16.7% of total Northwest payrolls for all industries. This is a significantly larger percentage than the statewide share of 12.5%.

The Manufacturing industry in Southeast Minnesota presents many job opportunities for job seekers, with various?in-demand occupations [ [link removed] ]?that provide wages that outpace the region's?cost of living [ [link removed] ]. In the second quarter of 2022, Southeast Minnesota had?2,432 job vacancies [ [link removed] ]?in Manufacturing. That was the second highest number ever recorded, and was nearly double the number of openings posted by manufacturers in 2019, prior to the pandemic.

With more than 32,000 jobs at just over 630 establishments, Manufacturing is once again the largest employing industry in Southwest Minnesota. Manufacturing provides almost one in every five jobs in the 23-county region, and has the largest payroll of any industry, accounting for 22.7% of total wages. In fact, average annual wages in Manufacturing neared $62,000 in 2022, which was about $11,000 higher than the total of all industries.
