You may have seen recently that the government chose to go back on long-established net zero policies and targets. Delaying the 2030 phase out of new petrol and diesel vehicles gets rid of a target the government was already on track to meet and that the motor industry widely agrees is not only achievable, but very necessary. We responded in the media and we will continue to highlight the environmental impact of transport emissions.
We’ve also been calling for a freeze to rail fares, pointing out the Government should freeze rail fares as they have done with fuel duty. They have been promising to reform ticketing for a long time, and so we’ve been pushing them to freeze rail fares until after this takes place.
There is also wonderful news from North Yorkshire, where the bus ticket price cap alongside a government grant, both of which we campaigned for, has saved many bus services that were due to be scrapped. Councillor Keane Duncan recently told North Yorkshire Council’s executive that many of the county’s bus services were “more popular than ever”, with the £2 fare cap tempting passengers back onto buses.
