Voice Your Support For Protecting America’s Arctic

President Biden has just canceled all remaining oil and gas leases in the Arctic Refuge. Now, the public has the opportunity to weigh in on the future of oil and gas development in the Arctic Refuge and strengthening protections for more than 13 million acres in the Western Arctic.

Please, take a moment to add your name to thank President Biden and Secretary Haaland and urge them to support maximum protections for the Arctic.

Friend — This September, President Biden announced that he’d cancel all remaining oil and gas leases issued by former President Trump in the Arctic Refuge.

This is huge news for our movement. With your help, LCV has fought long and hard to protect the Arctic in the face of fierce opposition from the oil and gas industry.

That’s not all: President Biden and Interior Secretary Deb Haaland have also announced two new opportunities for the public to weigh in. The first is a proposal to strengthen protections for 13 million acres in the Western Arctic. These proposed protections are vitally important for this unique and sacred landscape and would build on efforts to permanently protect the Arctic region. The second opportunity is a chance to weigh in on the future of oil and gas development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge is home to the Gwich’in nation, as well as a vast array of species, including caribou, bears, migratory birds, and tundra vegetation like mosses and lichens. Any proposed oil and gas development must consider all potential impacts to the lands, water, wildlife, communities, and climate in this sacred area.

This isn’t a done deal yet, Friend. We need your help to keep the momentum going. Please, take a moment to thank both President Biden and Secretary Haaland and tell them to finish the job by finalizing the strongest possible protections for the Arctic. It only takes a minute — add your name right now >>

The cancellation of the illegally held leases in the Arctic Refuge will restore lands that are both sacred to the Indigenous Gwich’in people and are vital to the health of the Arctic ecosystem. And it wouldn’t be possible without your tireless advocacy, combined with the voices of Indigenous and other communities in Alaska who have fought these illegal leases.

This is just one step towards permanent protection for one of the planet’s most vulnerable landscapes. We can’t afford to let up until the Arctic is safe from climate-killing oil and gas development — both now and in the future.

Your voice can make a real difference as the Biden administration weighs important protections for the Arctic. Add your name to our petition now to thank President Biden and Secretary Haaland and tell them to finalize the strongest possible protections >>

Thank you for taking action for our planet’s future.

Onward,

LCV Conservation Team
