I’ve been doing this work for a long time, John. Growing up in a parsonage in the Jim Crow South, I learned early on that it’s not only our words that matter -- it’s our deeds, too.
I took those lessons to heart and got involved in civil rights at a young age -- 12 to be exact. I was a founding member -- along with my dear friend the late Congressman John Lewis -- of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. In fact, I met my late wife, Emily, while in jail for organizing a sit-in at a segregated lunch counter in Orangeburg, South Carolina. We shared a hamburger that day, and got married 18 months later.
John, I’m still fighting for those same values -- to put America’s greatness within reach for all Americans, no matter what they look like, who they love, or where they live. That’s what I’ve been doing for the 30 years I’ve been in Congress -- from my time as House Majority Whip to the work I’m doing now as Democratic Assistant Leader. [[link removed]]
