Dear John, Governor Youngkin’s strategy to get Republicans to vote early seems to be working. Analysts tell us that Republican leaning precincts have a higher than expected turnout. This phenomenon, coupled with low Democratic turnout in an off-off year, will decimate the Blue Brick wall. Yet, so much is at stake!

If Democratic Senators are not there to push back on abortion bans and ensure that women and girls have access to safe and legal abortion care, Virginia will look like every other state in the South. You might think you will not be personally affected by an abortion ban, but everyone in the commonwealth would be impacted by such a draconian measure. According to the Journal of General Internal Medicine (February 2023 edition), there is a 76 percent reduction in requests for physician licenses, overall, in states with strict abortion bans.
Moreover, obstetricians are leaving states with abortion bans because the practice of medicine must be patient focused and not driven by blanket policies with few exceptions. We have all heard about women who have had serious diagnoses during their pregnancies such as advanced cancer conditions. When asked how these conditions would be treated under the "life of the mother" exception in Governor Youngkin's proposed abortion ban, physicians tell us that the exception would cause great harm to the mother. For example, does the language allow for an abortion if there is a significantly reduced quality of life if the pregnancy is carried to term or does death have to be on the patient’s doorstep? Do you want the government making this decision for you or your loved one?

It is also discouraging to see how little the MAGA faction of the Republican party cares about everyday Virginians and the influence this faction exercises over the entire Republican party -- even in Virginia. The talk of a government shutdown is hurting Virginia families. If a shutdown happens, our friends and neighbors will need the support of safety-net programs that the Democrats at every level of government have funded for years.
Many of our neighbors are government contractors and they will not be paid during a government shut-down. Small businesses, the backbone of our diverse and innovative economy, would be particularly hit bard by a shutdown. Yet, Governor Youngkin is not fighting for us. He is courting the MAGA faction to earn points for a national nomination.
Enough is enough! Send a message that good government matters and Virginia’s families matter. Any donation you make will help elect Democratic Senate candidates in tough races.
