When an aluminum company paid smugglers to haul toxic waste and illegally dump it across the border, I took them to court — and won . That prosecution set a powerful precedent that no company, big or small, could avoid accountability when harming people and our planet.
When a Republican member of Congress refused to take action in the best interest of our community, I said enough was enough. I stepped up and ran for office against him. In what was the most expensive House race ever at that time, I defeated the incumbent, flipped the seat blue, and became only the second Democrat to represent the seat in a century.
When Californians demanded action, I took up their call. I’ve brought people together to expand health care access for millions of Americans, to lower the cost of prescription drugs, to invest millions of dollars in infrastructure, and to expand affordable housing.
And when Donald Trump threatened to usurp our democracy, I stood up to defend it. I served as the lead Manager for Trump’s first impeachment trial in the Senate — and together, we secured the first bipartisan vote ever to convict a sitting president.
