We derive our name from Margaret "Maggie" Chase Smith, who made history as the inaugural woman to be elected to both houses of Congress. Maggie's tenure included a period in the U.S. House from 1940 to 1948, followed by service in the U.S. Senate from 1948 to 1972. In 1964, she achieved another milestone by becoming the first woman ever to have her name nominated for the presidency by one of the two major political parties.
Margaret Chase Smith was a true trailblazer, notable for her contributions as a member of the Appropriations and Armed Services panels, as well as her unwavering commitment to championing free speech. She stands out in history as one of the earliest figures to publicly oppose Senator Joseph McCarthy. Maggie's legacy endures as a significant and enduring female voice in the landscape of American political life. We are proud to carry her name at Maggie's List.
