Friend:
The Supreme Court announced deeply troubling news this week: The Court will hear Fulton v. City of Philadelphia, a case that could determine if government-funded foster care agencies can turn away qualified prospective parents who are LGBTQ or the “wrong” religion.
As I made clear in my press statement, the best interests of children must be our government’s top priority, not the religious views of a taxpayer-funded agency. No child should lose out on a safe home with a loving family just because a couple cannot meet a religious litmus test.
Yet that’s exactly what happened in Philadelphia and states across the country – including South Carolina, where the Trump administration and state officials gave an evangelical Protestant agency the green light to reject our client Aimee Maddonna solely because she’s Catholic. Americans United is representing Aimee in court, and we continue to fight government-supported religious discrimination everywhere we can.
Now that the foster care issue has reached the Supreme Court, AU has the important job of helping the American people understand its ramifications and organizing our allies to urge the justices to put America’s children first.
It’s your support that enables us to play this critical role. Thank you for being with us, friend.
In solidarity,
