Protecting MI Pension Grants

Earlier this year, I signed legislation to roll back the retirement tax on our seniors, saving 500,000 households an average of $1,000 a year, putting money back in their pockets for gas, groceries, or gifts for their grandkids. After a lifetime of hard work, Michigan seniors deserve to retire with dignity.

Last week, we took another step to keep more money in seniors’ pockets. The Protecting MI Pension Grant awards [ [link removed] ] will support public service retirees in 123 Michigan communities [ [link removed] ], without compromising funding for critical public services.

The program was created to ensure that Michiganders who served as police officers, firefighters, sanitation workers, and in so many other invaluable professions, will receive the stable, secure retirement that they earned over a lifetime.

Today, we are continuing to deliver on our promise to Michigan’s seniors and shoring up municipal budgets across the state. Let’s keep putting money back in people’s pockets and building a brighter future.

Student Success Grants

This month, the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity’s (LEO) Office of Sixty by 30, Global Detroit, and Michigan College Access Network (MCAN) awarded $1.5M in Student and Immigrant Success Grants [ [link removed] ] to 12 Michigan community and tribal colleges, supporting their efforts to increase college completion for adult learners and international, immigrant, refugee or first-generation students.  

These grants will help more people get the skills and credentials they need to land good-paying, in-demand, high-skill jobs.  

The grants will also help us meet our Sixty by 30 goal—to have 60% of Michiganders complete postsecondary education or training by 2030. When I took office, it was 41%. Today, it’s above 50%. 

These grants are split into two categories: 


* The Sixty by 30 Adult Student Success Grant provides up to $200,000 over two years to selected Michigan community and tribal colleges to improve persistence and completion rates among adult students, with a particular on Futures for Frontliners and Michigan Reconnect students. 
* The Immigrant Student Success Grant provides up to $150,000 over 18 months to selected Michigan community and tribal colleges to increase enrollment, retention, and program completion rates for international, immigrant, refugee or first-generation students.  

These Student Success Grants will help Michigan community and tribal colleges grow and build support systems to help students make it across the finish line. These colleges are critical partners in filling the state’s talent gap and helping people gain the skills they need to make it here in Michigan.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Michigan is home to a large number of residents of Spanish and Latin American descent, who play a vital role in growing businesses, generating innovative ideas, strengthening our economy, creating jobs, and enriching our communities. That’s why I proclaimed September 15 – October 15 as Hispanic Heritage Month [ [link removed] ]. 

During this month, Michigan's Hispanic American community will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month through a series of special events featuring Hispanic history, food, dance, and art, celebrating the rich tradition and many contributions this community has made to the state of Michigan. 

We appreciate and honor the countless achievements of Hispanic Americans and continue our efforts to ensure our state is a welcoming and inclusive place that provides just and equal opportunities for all.
