Hi Friends,

I hope everyone is well and enjoying the start of  Hispanic Heritage Month! I want to provide you with an important deadline reminder and a few updates on what I've been working on for the 34th Congressional District of Texas.

Sincerely,

ImageFriendly reminder, the next PACT Act deadline is Saturday, September 30, 2023!

If you were deployed to a combat zone, have not enrolled in VA health care, or left active duty between September 11, 2001, and October 1, 2013, you may be eligible to enroll in VA health care directly through the PACT Act. This special enrollment period gives veterans who served in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other combat zones the opportunity to enroll without first applying for VA disability benefits.

To learn more, or to sign up for VA health care, go to VA.gov/PACT or call 1-800-MYVA411.

Over the last few weeks, I have met with various advocacy groups and stakeholders in Washington, D.C., to ensure your voices are heard. My staff and I have also recognized local veterans who have given so much for our country, led important discussions on fiscal responsibility, and recognized South Texas legends in our Nation's Capital.

The 46th Annual Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) Awards Gala and Leadership Conference was last week- one of the largest celebrations of Latino excellence in the country! I was honored to speak at the Leadership Conference’s ‘Building a Legacy: How Latino Families Can Secure Their Financial Future’ panel, and celebrate two RGV legends, Sister Norma Pimentel and Bobby Pulido, who were honored at this year's Gala.

Take a look at what we have been up to!

I recently announced $663,159 in federal funding to support our community.

I also led my colleagues in urging the Department of Interior to resolve the delays for offshore oil, gas, and wind leasing. Offshore energy development is poised to create tens of thousands of jobs over the next few years with revenues supporting our region.

For more details regarding the letter, you may read my full press release here.

Additionally, my Democratic Colleagues and I sent a letter to Speaker Kevin McCarthy urging immediate legislative action to avert a government shutdown.

Read the letter here.

I also joined my Texas Democratic colleagues on a letter to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator, Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, requesting immediate intervention in the State of Texas' violation of Federal Medicaid rules and the errors which lead to thousands of Texans being mistakenly kicked off health coverage.

Read the letter here.
