News from Congresswoman Kathy Manning

Dear John,

Thank you for subscribing to my Congressional newsletter. It is my pleasure to represent you in Congress.

As you may know, if Congress is unable to pass legisaltion to fund the federal government by September 30th, the government will shut down.

A government shutdown would harm federal workers, including the more than 6,500 workers in our district. It would also send shockwaves through the economy. Democrats struck a deal with Republicans for the budget when we lifted the debt ceiling in June 2023. The only reason the government is now on the brink of a shutdown is because extreme House Republicans are demanding Speaker McCarthy reneg on the deal. This is unacceptable and will hurt the American people.

I'm fighting in Washington to avoid a shutdown and urging my Republican colleagues to pass legislation to fund the government at levels agreed upon by Speaker McCarthy and President Biden earlier this year in the Fiscal Responsibility Act

In the event of a shut down, I will share guidance about how it will impact North Carolinians.

As I continue working to avert a shutdown, see below for a review of the work my team and I have done in North Carolina's Sixth District and in Washington throughout September.

Sincerely,

Constituent Services

PLEASE NOTE: Congresswoman Manning's district office will remain open in the event of a shutdown. However, thousands of federal employees will be furloughed. This will limit the ability of constituent services liasons to work with federal agencies on behalf of Sixth District constituents and will likely cause casework to be delayed.

Congresswoman Manning's Constituent Services Liaisons can assist you with troubles you may have regarding federal agencies. Cases Congresswoman Manning's office handles include but are not limited to:

  • Help receiving medical care at the VA
  • Immigration services
  • IRS Inquiries and concerns
  • Military awards and commendations
  • Service academy nominations
  • Medicare benefits
  • Passports (please submit requests for renewals SIX months in advance)

The time for processing passports recently increased due to a 30 percent spike in passport requests and renewals. On average, the State Department requires 10 to 13 weeks to process a passport application and 7 to 9 weeks to process an expedited passport which costs an additional $60. If your passport will expire in the next six months, you should begin the renewal process as soon as possible before planning any travel out of the country. For more information about passport renewal, click here.

For assistance from the District office, please contact them at (336) 333-5005, or submit a casework claim here.
