"Maryland closes 2023 fiscal year with $555M budget surplus" - The Baltimore Sun
Last week, Brooke announced that the state wrapped up the fiscal year with a $555 million unassigned general fund balance.
This is a big deal! While there have been challenges in the past year – including national inflation and the ongoing economic impacts of COVID – this budget surplus shows we are living within our means. Although risk remains elevated, this surplus is a welcome sign.
Closing out the books each year is also a large part of Brooke’s job as Comptroller. Maryland’s run general accounting division is housed in the Office of the Comptroller and is responsible for working with every other state agency and entity to balance the books.
