Unionized Nursing Homes More Likely to Report Workplace Injuries
US nursing homes are required to report workplace injuries and illnesses to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

In their article in the September issue of Health Affairs, Adam Dean and coauthors examine the relationship between nursing home unionization and compliance with OSHA’s requirement.

Dean and coauthors determine that two years after unionization, unionized nursing homes were 31.1 percent more likely to report workplace injuries and illness data to OSHA than nonunion nursing homes.

These results suggest that unions play a role in promoting workplace safety in US nursing homes.

The authors note that this is particularly significant given that nursing homes are a sector of the US economy with one of the highest rates of workplace injuries and illnesses.
