I joined my colleague from New Mexico, Senator Tom Udall, in introducing the Fair Returns for Public Lands Act of 2020. This bill will update the nation’s antiquated public lands royalty system and ensure that taxpayers get fair returns on leases of public lands for oil and gas production. Low royalty rates on oil produced on federal lands has deprived the federal treasury of billions of dollars. The royalty rate has not been addressed for 100 years. This is just one example of Big Oil saying it wants a free market, but lobbying for taxpayer-funded corporate welfare. It’s time for my colleagues in Congress to end this oil company loophole, end the corporate welfare and bring oil leasing into the 21st century.

This is my 40th year holding a Q&A in each of Iowa’s 99 counties. My regional staff is also committed to holding meetings across Iowa. My Iowa staff serve as my eyes and ears when I’m working in Washington, D.C. That’s why they host mobile office hours in every county and attended roughly 1,400 meetings across the state last year. They meet with disaster victims, government officials and senior citizens. They attend ribbon cuttings, community forums and legislative discussions. I encourage Iowans to contact any of my six offices across the state if I can be of assistance on a federal matter.

Along with Senator Ernst and many other Senate colleagues, I supported a resolution to preserve Minor League Baseball clubs across the country, including those in Davenport, Burlington and Clinton, in response to Major League Baseball’s proposal to eliminate 42 teams nationwide. Baseball is part of our country’s rich history. Growing up and going to baseball games with your friends and family is something that Americans all across the country have in common. I want Iowans to continue to have access to Minor League Baseball. Each and every team in the state plays an important role in their communities. In January, the World Health Organization declared a public health emergency of international concern regarding the outbreak of a new coronavirus detected in China. I've continued to monitor the situation as the disease has spread. To view up-to-date information on the coronavirus, please visit my website here.
