John,
It's time to end
cash payments for people doing drugs and not accepting
treatment.
Because compassion has to be paired with
accountability.
We will continue to support those
struggling with addiction who are seeking help. People who have an
identified substance use disorder who receive cash through county
assistance, also known as general assistance or GA, will only be
allowed to do so if they are receiving treatment. But, those who
refuse to enroll in the wide range of treatment services the city
offers will no longer receive County-funded cash
assistance.
If you want help, we are here to provide it. But no more
“anything goes” on our streets. If
you agree, please sign the petition in support.
While counties are limited in their
abilities to force people to accept treatment, my drug treatment initiative will give
people another push to enter into the treatment they need and that we
all want them to access. And it
will prevent those who are uninterested or unwilling to access
treatment from getting financial support until they do.
My initiative will require the
Board of Supervisors to adopt this change because our local government
lacks the tools to compel people into treatment.
But I need your help. Will
you sign up in support of my initiative?
Treatment and compassion are tools
we can employ to help motivate people to get treatment instead of
allowing people to deteriorate and die on our streets. San Francisco
is a city of compassion, but also a city that demands
accountability.
Sincerely,
Mayor London Breed
