New Plumbing Code Takes Effect Next Month

Wisconsin offering a grace period for related exams

?

The first updates to Wisconsin plumbing code since 2009 will take effect on October 1, but related licensing exams will not be administered under the new code until November.

The state?s Plumbing Code Advisory Committee received input from professional groups to shape these updates, which can now be found in state administrative code.

The code updates include increased bacterial control options in healthcare facilities, adoption of nationally recognized standards for water reuse, energy efficiency enhancements, and the addition of tankless water heaters.

The Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) has crafted a helpful summary of the plumbing code changes.

While the new plumbing code takes effect October 1, DSPS is offering a brief grace period for related licensing exams. Exams will be administered under the old code throughout October. However, exams will be administered under the updated code starting in November.

Below is a list of exams that will be impacted by the updates to plumbing code:

  • Automatic Fire Sprinkler Contractor
  • Automatic Fire Sprinkler Contractor-Maintenance
  • Automatic Fire Sprinkler System Tester
  • Commercial Plumbing Inspector
  • Journeyman Automatic Fire Sprinkler Fitter
  • Journeyman Plumber
  • Journeyman Plumber Restricted Appliance
  • Journeyman Plumber Restricted Service
  • Master Plumber
  • Master Plumber Restricted Appliance
  • Master Plumber Restricted Service
  • POWTS Inspector
  • UDC Plumbing Inspector

?

Please note there will be no grace period for plan reviews. Plans submitted to DSPS for review on or after October first will be evaluated under the new code.

DSPS Secretary-designee Dan Hereth joined representatives from several professional groups at Plumbers Local 75 in Madison late last month for a ceremonial signing of the code, and to celebrate the collaborative effort that led to the state?s first plumbing code update in 14 years.

?It?s a homegrown code. We own the code here in Wisconsin. It?s not a national code, so it takes a lot of collaboration from partners.? Hereth said at the time.

DSPS is in the process of finalizing trainings related to the new code and will soon be contacting impacted license holders about training opportunities.
