Dear John, I now have an opponent.

Well, actually, I have two.

I would call this a pointed reminder that we are facing an upcoming reelection campaign. So, like in every campaign before this, we will not take anything for granted. We will talk to folks about what we've accomplished, what our plans are for the future, and, above all else, what our underlying values are and why they motivate us.

But what are those values? Well, this should sum it up:

When prospective candidates ask me about running for public office I tell them,

"There is only one reason to run for public office: to make a difference. It's not about you, it's about working to improve the lives of those in your communities."

That means I preside over the State Senate in a fair and impartial way, setting a tone of respectful discourse to bring out the best in our members and ensure we can effectively make policy.

It means prioritizing issues, such as housing, that are critical to support the people of our state. Our work on housing goes back many years, but I'm proud of the fact that folks have been calling this most recent session "The Year of Housing" because of the progress we made in the legislature this year.

And despite our focus and accomplishments, we still have a lot yet to do.

But my commitment isn't wavering, and my energy isn't waning, John.Paula and I are deeply honored to serve the state in this way and we would also be honored to receive your help so we can continue our work and continue to make a difference .
