Hi,
The GOP agenda is just cut, cut, cut. Cut taxes for the rich and big
corporations. Cut Medicare. Cut Social Security.
The House GOP released a plan to raise the Social Security retirement age
to 69, which would result in benefit reductions across the board for
seniors.^1 And the right-wingers in Congress will use leverage of a
potential government shutdown to slash Social Security benefits. Democrats
must stand firm and protect Social Security!

Republican cuts to Social Security would be disastrous. Nearly everyone
over 65 years old in the United States receives a Social Security check.
The program has been extraordinarily effective, and without it, millions
of American seniors would fall into abject poverty.^2
Raising the Social Security retirement age means that early retirees get a
heavier reduction, and later retirees get a smaller bonus. Researchers
estimate that raising the retirement age would reduce overall Social
Security payments for all retirees by 20%.^3
The GOP’s new plan would also prevent raising of the Social Security
payroll cap, which currently mandates that income over $160,200/year is
not subject to Social Security taxes. The payroll cap means that
billionaires pay the same amount into Social Security as someone making
$160,200 per year. This is yet another example of a tax cut for the rich
that hurts everyone else.
We cannot allow Republicans to use the threat of a government shutdown to
gut Social Security. Democrats must stand firm and refuse all cuts to
Social Security, including attempts to raise the retirement age.
