The surf ecosystem of Puerto Escondido is facing threats on all fronts that are impacting the waves and the health of the coastal environment.
Save The Waves is supporting efforts by COSTA UNIDA, Salvemos Colorada and others to demand that the government take action to protect the waves and coastal ecosystem of Puerto Escondido.

Why This Matters.

  • Puerto Escondido is home to some of the best beach breaks in the world, including Playa Zicatela and Playa Colorada.
  • Often referred to as the ‘Mexican Pipeline’ the wave is regarded as an international treasure and admired by the entire surfing community.
  • Zicatela and Colorada have critically important terrestrial and marine biodiversity, are home to abundant wildlife, and are an important habitat for nesting sea turtles.
  • Colorada is one of the last pristine beaches and mangrove coastal ecosystems around Puerto Escondido.


What's The Threat?

  • On the northern side of Puerto, Colorada is threatened by sewage contamination due to improper wastewater infrastructure. The expansion of a nearby port may make current erosion issues worse. 
  • On the other side of the port, Zicatela is threatened by harmful and rapid coastal development, sewage pollution, and erosion, leading to the loss of the important sandbanks that help form the waves.
