John,
In just 4 days, Republicans in the House of Representatives will shut down the government. We’ve talked a lot about what they're hoping to accomplish―mainly, a set of budget cuts that would slash Medicaid, dismantle the Social Security Administration, and set the stage for a process to destroy Social Security and Medicare behind closed doors.
Here’s what will happen when the government shuts down: Existing Social Security payments will still go out―but it will be harder to apply for new benefits.
We MUST protect Social Security and Medicare from Republican hostage-takers. Donate $7 to fight back!
10,000 Americans retire every single day. Many of them will face delays until Kevin McCarthy’s caucus finishes its temper tantrum to get the benefits they earned throughout a lifetime of hard work.
And employees at the Social Security Administration who make sure that benefits go out in full and on time will have to work without pay for the duration of the shutdown. As our President Nancy Altman told CNN, this could cause workers at the already understaffed agency to leave, making it far more difficult for Americans to claim their earned benefits.1
This is another step in the Republican war on seniors. Already this year, they voted to cut Social Security and to raise drug prices. The only reason those plans didn’t become law is that Democrats stopped them.
If Republicans choose to shut down the government, we'll make sure the seniors in their district know that their earned Social Security benefits are being held hostage. Hands off!
During the debt ceiling crisis, we were able to mobilize and protect our Social Security system. We need to do the same now―can you chip in today?
Thank you,
Alex Lawson Social Security Works
