I’m Emily, mom of a survivor of the 2021 Oxford High School shooting in Michigan. Since getting the message we all fear that morning, I’ve known I needed to take action to stop mass shootings like the one that tore my son’s school apart. Michigan’s Democrats have stood up for us in Lansing, but unfortunately, politicians in Washington – like my opponent, Republican Rep. John James – are still letting our children and our communities down. On the morning of November 30th, 2021, I got the message that all parents fear:

Thanks to the heroic actions of his teacher, he survived by escaping out of the school’s back door to shelter in a nearby grocery store.

But four of Andrew’s peers didn’t go home to their parents that day and several more were wounded.

All it took was nine minutes for a 15-year-old shooter armed with a legally obtained military-grade weapon to change our community forever.

Stories like my family’s are all too common. But I want to make sure no one ever gets a message like I received that day and has to wonder if their loved one survived the latest massacre. That’s why I’m running for Congress in my home state of Michigan and why I’ve teamed up with BAWN to get the word out about our fight to end mass shootings by passing a federal assault weapons ban. But unfortunately, the gun lobby is RUSHING funds to Republicans like my opponent John James like never before – so I need to rally as many gun safety champions as I can to ensure I have a chance to fight back. When my son was forced to run for his life from a school shooter, I knew I needed to take drastic action.

It took 15 months and another deadly mass shooting for new gun safety regulations to be passed in Michigan – yet you can still stroll into a store and walk out with assault weapons and handguns like the ones used in both massacres in my state.

We just can’t afford to wait another 15 months to take action while more people die – and I’m determined to make sure our leaders DON’T wait any longer.

After over 500 mass shootings this year, it’s clear a ban on the weapons of war that make these slaughters so deadly is more critical than ever. I’m running for Congress to get that ban passed as soon as possible – because our communities just can’t wait any longer.
