“ I urge each and every one of you to do your part to prevent these horrific weapons from ever being used again. If your country has not yet signed and ratified the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, please do so now. Do not delay”
- Melissa Parke, ICAN Executive Director
Hi Friend --
Every year on September 26, we mark the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons by showing the world that speaking up against nuclear weapons can happen at all levels and in many different ways. And this year, ICAN campaigners have come out with some incredible actions and results!
Over the past weeks we have seen:
- Albanian activists projecting a powerful message onto their parliament: "Sign the Nuclear Weapons Ban TPNW Treaty Now”
- A UK-wide day of action <[link removed]> - organised by CND UK - on Saturday, protesting the potential return of US nuclear weapons to UK.
- France’s second largest city, Lyon endorsed the ICAN Cities Appeal, <[link removed]> calling on France to join the TPNW and ordering all banks to declare whether their policies include the TPNW in their future dealings with the city. All of this on the eve of this international day, and just one day after French campaigners rallied <[link removed]> at events across the country - including in Lyon - to support the treaty.
- Attention-grabbing Artists Against the Bomb exhibits in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Berlin, Germany. Check out some of the art on display at @artiststsgainsthebomb <[link removed]>on instagram.
Meanwhile at the UN, our new ED Melissa Parke will be delivering ICAN’s statement to the High-level plenary meeting to commemorate and promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons today. You can read her full statement here <[link removed]>.
We know so much more is happening around the world, both on and offline, which we will be keeping track of on our social media accounts (@nuclearban <[link removed]>). But I hope we have inspired you to use your own voice against these horrific weapons today. Because to end nuclear weapons, we need everyone.
So thank you for standing with us,
Seth Shelden
