Journalists increasingly face online harassment campaigns. Here's one resource to help.
Poynter managing editor Ren LaForme wrote in his Open Tabs ([link removed]) newsletter last week, "Too many journalists have been thrust into the petrifying and disorienting cyclone of a social media harassment campaign. The public nature of our work and social media’s performative outrage cycles make it nearly inevitable."
A new face was recently put to this troubling trend: Las Vegas Review-Journal crime reporter Sabrina Schnur, whose reporting on the death of a retired Las Vegas police chief led to extreme harassment, including death threats.
Poynter media business reporter Angela Fu caught up with Schnur and her editor. "A reporter made sure a retired police chief’s death didn’t go uncovered. Then social media attacked her" ([link removed]) recounts how Schnur and her editor worked through the impacts and effects of this coordinated hate campaign.
All of this was happening, LaForme noted, "to a newsroom that just last year endured the killing of one of its reporters, Jeff German, and a public official being charged with his murder."
