** Hispanic Heritage Month Festivities in Charlotte Civilian Climate Corps: Jobs to Tackle Climate Change
------------------------------------------------------------
Did you know Hispanic / Latino residents make up close to 15% of Charlotte's population? And that Latino children make up over 27% of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools' students? Charlotte boasts an increasingly diverse and vibrant population. Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15th to October 15th in the U.S. to recognize the rich and varied cultures of Hispanic and Latino Americans, and their contributions to the United States.

Why is Hispanic Heritage Month observed over two months? In 1968, Hispanic Heritage Week started under President Lyndon Johnson. Then in 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded the festivities to a 30-day period starting on Sept. 15 – the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Independence Day in Mexico and Chile follow on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18. Check out local Charlotte events here ([link removed]) and here ([link removed]) .
_______________

Have you heard about the new Civilian Climate Corps rolled out by President Biden this week? The Civilian Climate Corps will put a new generation of Americans to work conserving our lands and waters, bolstering community resilience, advancing environmental justice, deploying clean energy, implementing energy efficient technologies, and tackling climate change.

The Civilian Climate Corps is modeled on President Roosevelt's Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), which planted more than three billion trees; built trails and shelters in over 800 parks; and planted over 200 million trees. From 1933 to 1942, the CCC employed over 3 million young men during the great depression and responded to the environmental disaster known as the Dust Bowl which killed around 7,000 people and left at least 2 million homeless.

The Civilian Climate Corps aims to employ 1.5 million Americans for a 5-year period, building on the foundation of the AmeriCorps program, to help preserve and remediate the natural environment across America while organically sequestering billions of tons of carbon. If you know somebody interested in joining up, check out the website here ([link removed]) .
Early Voting begins October 19th to select your City Council representatives, Mayor, and three Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board representatives. Read about the School Bond on the ballot here ([link removed]) and here ([link removed]) .
