** Flu Shots During Pregnancy Failed to Lower the Risk of Fetal Death, Preterm Birth and Low Birth Weight, and For Some Outcomes, Infants of Unvaccinated Moms Fared Better

A research team out of South Africa has just published a paper comparing four outcomes—fetal death, low birth weight, small for gestational age birth and preterm birth—for infants whose mothers received flu shots or a placebo.
In their surprisingly frank conclusions, not only do the researchers report that influenza vaccination during pregnancy was ineffective in lowering risk for the four outcomes, but—ever so cautiously—they also note that the vaccinated infants fared worse.

** Updates on the NY Lawsuits Challenging the Repeal of the Religious Exemption
------------------------------------------------------------
An update from attorney Michael Sussman for NY lawsuit for religious exemptions:
I know many deeply involved in the religious repeal litigation want answers. So, here is the up-to-the minute status. We applied for a preliminary injunction to prevent the state from implementing the religious repeal. The court set 6:00 pm on 7/29 as the time and date for the state defendants to respond on that issue. The state responded by 9:40 am the following day.
In the meantime, I drafted a response to the memo of law the state defendants had submitted opposing the Temporary Restraining Order and you submitted over 350 Affidavits which we bound. On July 30, we mailed all of those and our brief to the court. I wanted to meet the July 31 deadline the first judge had set for all legal papers.
After I received state defendants' opposition to the preliminary injunction, I wrote the judge and asked her for a chance to respond to those arguments and we will file that response today (Tuesday) by 5 pm. At that point, all the legal arguments will have been submitted in written form.
I also asked for oral argument and the judge has deferred deciding whether to entertain that. That is where we are. I am trying to get before the court our arguments in the strongest form I can make them and do understand what is at stake for thousands of you.

We filed our motion for a preliminary injunction on August 6. This is moving quickly because the judge wants it heard before school starts.
The state is supposed to respond on August 13 and our reply is due August 16. A hearing date hasn’t been set yet.
