Friend,
For 17 years, the official U.S. Military policy towards LGBTQ+ servicemembers was one of pure discrimination.
Don't Ask, Don't Tell prevented countless qualified Americans from serving in our armed forces. It betrayed our values and made our country less safe. I was serving on the Board of the Human Rights Campaign when President Obama relegated DADT to the dustbin of history just over 12 years ago. It was a victory for civil rights that we had fought hard for — but it wasn't the end of the road.
Federal law still doesn't include explicit anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ Americans. The Supreme Court is rolling back civil rights, and red states across the country have passed dozens of hateful laws targeting trans-Americans.
Friend, Sepi has experienced this discrimination firsthand, and she's dedicated her life to fighting back. We need a civil rights champion like her in Congress.
