Daily Docket — Monday, Sept. 25
The Danger of a Single Election Day Narrative

By Suzanne Pritzker, AJ Durrani, Niloufar Hafizi

Here are some recent updates.

  • Today in Alabama, the special master, whom the court has tasked with drawing a new congressional map, must submit a map proposal in the state’s ongoing congressional redistricting in Allen v. Milligan.

  • The New York attorney general's office sent a cease-and-desist letter to a group accused of impersonating election officials and confronting voters at their homes. The office claims that, if true, the actions would amount to illegal voter intimidation.

Here’s what to expect coming up tomorrow.

  • Trial begins in a federal lawsuit challenging Florida’s congressional map, specifically the 5th congressional district. A three-judge panel will decide whether the elimination of the Black-performing district violates the 14th and 15th Amendments’ prohibition on intentional racial discrimination. Read more about how the map ended up in court here.

  • The U.S. Supreme Court will meet for the start of its “long conference,” during which the justices review all the cert petitions that have accumulated since the end of the Court’s previous term at the end of June. Stay tuned for our explainer on all things SCOTUS tomorrow!

ICYMI, listen to our latest episode of Defending Democracy. In the podcast episode that dropped last Friday, Assembly Minority Leader Greta Neubauer (D) broke down the Wisconsin GOP's anti-democratic attempts to remove Justice Janet Protasiewicz and Meagan Wolfe, the state’s top election official. Listen on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.
