During a recent speech by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Canada, a group of Canadian supporters of Ukraine's struggle against Russia caused controversy by recognizing and cheering for a former Nazi soldier who fought against the Russians during World War II.
Zelenskyy was addressing the Canadian Parliament, urging the nation to reaffirm its support for Ukraine, which has received over $9 billion in direct financial aid and military assistance from Canada. During the ceremony, applause erupted for 98-year-old Yaroslav Hunk, who had fought with the 14th division of the Waffen SS against the Russians in Ukraine during World War II.
Jewish advocacy groups quickly criticized the Canadian Parliament's decision to honor Hunk as a "hero." In response, House of Commons Speaker Anthony Rota issued an apology, acknowledging the mistake and expressing gratitude to Holocaust survivors and war veterans. Rota promised a full explanation of how Hunk came to be honored at a later date.
Rota stated, "I have subsequently become aware of more information which causes me to regret my decision to do so." He further extended his deepest apologies to Jewish communities in Canada and around the world.
As the war between Ukraine and Russia enters its second year, critics have raised concerns about the financial costs to their respective nations and questioned Zelenskyy's motives. During his visit to the United States, Zelenskyy assured American lawmakers that he would treat embezzlement of foreign aid as an act of treason, addressing a persistent problem among government officials.
President Joe Biden also emphasized the need for a united front behind Ukraine during his recent speech at the United Nations General Assembly, warning that Russia is hoping the world grows "weary" of the conflict.
Biden stated, "If you allow Ukraine to be carved up, is the independence of any nation secure? I respectfully suggest the answer is no."
Support for aid to Ukraine has declined at home, with approximately half of Americans now believing that the more than $100 billion in foreign aid sent to Ukraine is no longer worth the cost.
