Dear John,

I am working to fully fund important government programs to Native Communities across New Mexico and the country so there is no lapse in funding on October 1, 2023. Importantly, if there is a federal government shutdown, please know that I worked to secure advanced appropriations for the Indian Health Service(IHS) last December. This means that even under a government shutdown, these essential health services will not be disrupted.

I understand how important it is to maintain IHS for all tribal nations. Without healthcare, our elders, families, and children’s well-being is jeopardized. IHS advance appropriations help uphold our nation’s trust and treaty obligations to Native communities.

If there is a shutdown, my office will work closely with affected communities to provide updates and guidance about what federal programs and agencies may be affected. Rest assured, I will continue to be a voice to ensure all tribal nations have adequate healthcare. Do not hesitate to reach out to our office if you have additional questions or concerns.
