Dear Friend,
Yesterday, after 146 long days of striking, the bargaining committee of the Writers Guild of America agreed to a tentative agreement with the studio bosses. Our chapter offers congratulations and solidarity to WGA leadership for reaching this crucial step towards a fair contract. It’s now up to the members to consider the agreement and decide their next steps together, but socialists will be there in solidarity every step of the way!
Since the WGA strike started on May 2nd, and the SAG-AFTRA strike started on July 14th, DSA-LA members have gone above and beyond supporting our fellow workers on strike. Our chapter launched THE SNACKLIST, which has raised over $80,000 to purchase snacks, supplies and solidarity to the picket lines across Los Angeles. Donations came from across the country and across the globe, showing that we are all connected in the fight against capitalism. Using the money raised, our chapter's Snackpack team of over 50 DSA members made 367 DELIVERIES(!!!) to the front lines of the fight against greedy bosses. Our organizers have been inundated with texts from WGA members saying how our support got them through to this point. We’re all in this together, because solidarity is the only way forward.
That said, THE HOLLYWOOD STRIKES ARE NOT OVER! OVER 65,000 SAG-AFTRA members are still ON STRIKE and we’ve got to keep showing our solidarity! The picket lines will continue starting tomorrow, and we all need to show up. DSA-LA is committed to continue our Snackpack program until SAG-AFTRA members get the deal they deserve. Our goal is to make deliveries to every picket line on every day of the week and we need your help to make that happen! Sign up now and we’ll be in touch to talk next steps!
WGA and SAG-AFTRA members have not been the only workers in Hollywood affected by the strike. Members of unions like IATSE, Teamsters Local 399 and the USWW Janitors have struggled, and our chapter is working to support them too! DSA-LA is proud to present a night of comedy and solidarity with JOHN EARLY & FRIENDS this Wednesday night at the Teragram Ballroom! The early show sold out so fast, we're excited to announce a SECOND late show. Grab your tickets now - all proceeds will go towards assisting unemployed and underemployed union families. Don't miss out!
The entertainment industry is just one part of DSA-LA’s Solidarity Season! UNITE HERE 11 members are still on strike and marching off the job across Los Angeles County. We’ve joined Inland Empire DSA to show up for striking UAW Local 230 members in Ontario, and we'll be out there again tomorrow! Kaiser Permanente workers have authorize a strike for October 4th and need our support. We’re showing up for Starbucks workers fighting back against labor violations illegal union-busting campaign. DSA is always #StrikeReady, and we want to know if you are too. Sign up now to receive updates about our labor support work and donate to our solidarity fund!
Socialists know that solidarity is a verb, not a noun! Let's build worker power together!
