make it clear: Reality television is NOT reality!

Dear MoveOn member,

It’s Nick Thompson and Jeremy Hartwell, from Netflix’s "Love is Blind,"
Season 2. Before we entered into the world of reality television, we
thought we understood what happened behind the scenes in unscripted
television. But we realized that we had no idea about the extent of
manipulation and misrepresentation that we would experience. Reality
television producers don’t want potential cast members—and definitely not
viewers—to know what happens before, during, and after filming.

Reality TV isn't what it seems. Streaming and production companies are
earning millions—even billions—of dollars at the expense of the well-being
of cast members like ourselves. We could never have imagined the extent of
deprivation of basic necessities, like access to water and the ability to
use the bathroom, or of coercion that would occur to us on set. We didn’t
think it would be legal, because it shouldn’t be. And the extent to which
producers can edit footage to craft an entirely different reality from
what actually unfolded was beyond our comprehension.

[ [link removed] ]Demand transparency from reality and unscripted television producers.
Tell them to add a disclaimer to all episodes saying that content can be
edited, manipulated, and presented in any order!

Unscripted television creates a distorted version of "reality," and
viewers deserve to know the truth—that episodes are for entertainment
purposes only, and the content can be edited, manipulated, and presented
in any order for storyline purposes.

Reality television producers are well aware of what potential cast members
and the public would think if they knew how much content was not only
edited but outright manipulated—or the unethical methods with which they
create this alternate version of reality. That’s why production companies
and networks intimidate cast members to keep them from speaking out, using
nondisclosure agreements and other legal threats to silence us.

But we won't be silenced. That's why we co-founded the Unscripted Cast
Advocacy Network (UCAN) Foundation—to demand that entertainment executives
profiting from coercion and lies be held accountable to cast members and
to the public. [ [link removed] ]That starts by owning up to the truth about reality
television. Add your name to the petition to demand that a disclaimer
accompany all reality television shows.

A disclaimer wouldn't change what we went through during and after filming
"Love is Blind." But it would help remind viewers that what they are
seeing isn’t a true representation of what actually occurred. And it’s the
first step in righting the wrongful misrepresentations that contort
expectations of reality for viewers and have long-lasting ramifications
for cast members.

The newest season of "Love is Blind" premiered this weekend. Those who
tuned in deserve to know the truth. [ [link removed] ]Join us as we put pressure on
production companies and streaming networks by signing the petition and
sharing it with three of your friends.

Thanks for all you do.
