This week, Trump’s Justice Department created an official section in its immigration office to strip citizenship rights away from naturalized immigrants.

While this administration frames the new rule as removing “dangerous” people from our country, lawyers and experts say that carrying out denaturalizations could be used to strip citizenship across the board — whether you’re deemed “dangerous” or not.

This is personal to me. I’m a naturalized citizen.

I was born and raised in Slovakia and became a U.S. citizen in 2007. Being an American citizen is really important to me because it means I can fully participate in my community that I love. I know many other naturalized citizens feel the same way.

The choice of this administration to devote an entire department to what used to be a pursuit of very narrow legal cases is telling.

This isn’t about justice or law. This is about continuing the attack on immigrants and people of color.

Becoming a citizen means becoming fully equal as an American under law. Yet Trump is trying to find every reason possible to attack those of us who aren’t “American enough”. And for what? Political gain.

This administration continues to walk down a dark path — one towards fascism and away from democracy. It has proven it time and time again, first by demonizing Mexicans and building a racist wall, then with a Muslim Ban.

These moments serve as a reminder that we can’t take anything for granted. Not our basic rights. Not our citizenship. Those who see an opportunity to hurt our most vulnerable are more than willing to do so.

That’s why we need fighters in Congress who will speak out on issues like this, not stay quiet because it’s politically inconvenient. Our humanity is at stake.
