Dear John,
I want to address a recent attack ad by my opponent, which claims that I voted against disaster relief for victims of Hurricane Sandy. I want to clarify that this accusation is simply untrue.
In 2012, when Hurricane Sandy struck the eastern seaboard, I indeed voted in favor of emergency relief for New York, New Jersey, and nearby states. The initial request for hurricane relief was for $23 billion, and I fully supported this vital aid.
However, when the bill returned to the House for final passage, it included an additional $37 billion (for a total of $60 billion) of unrelated wasteful spending. Alongside two other Louisiana Republicans, I voted against this excessive and unrelated spending, a decision made in the interest of responsible fiscal stewardship.
I remain committed to helping those in need during times of disaster, but I also believe in the importance of fiscal responsibility. Thank you for your continued support as we work to set the record straight and focus on the real issues that matter to the people of Louisiana.
Sincerely,
John Fleming, M.D.
