If you’ve been looking for a moment to donate to state-level candidates, this is it. Money makes the biggest impact in down-ballot races, right as candidates enter the general. Your dollars help Democrats hire staff, set up field offices, reach voters, and launch programs to defeat Republicans who want to draw unfair maps and suppress the vote.

State legislatures affect every single one of us. They pass the laws that govern our day-to-day lives, and draw the Congressional maps. When Republicans control state legislatures, they can gerrymander districts, affecting who’s elected to Congress, who controls the House, and what legislation is passed for the next decade.

Look at Virginia, where the Democratic state legislature (that you helped elect!) passed the Equal Rights Amendment, abortion access legislation, gun violence prevention legislation, and removed several barriers to the ballot.

Compare all that progress to Virginia’s neighbor, North Carolina, where the GOP-controlled state legislature gerrymandered congressional district maps back in 2011 to give their party an unfair electoral advantage. Republican legislators there regularly attack abortion access, and refuse to pass laws to protect LGBTQ communities from discrimination.

Getting fair maps in 2021 and passing legislation that will actually improve people's lives depends on winning the most competitive races in these states. So lend these candidates a hand before they enter the general election.
