According to a recent Gallup survey, the proportion of Democrats who identify as religious has decreased by over 20 percentage points from 1999 to 2023.
In the initial Gallup poll in 1999, 60 percent of Democrats considered themselves religious, a figure similar to the 62 percent among Republicans. However, over the past two decades, the number of religious Democrats has plummeted by 23 percentage points, now standing at 37 percent.
During this period, the survey revealed a shift in the Democratic Party. The percentage of Democrats who identify as "spiritual but not religious" has risen by 14 points, while those who claim to be neither religious nor spiritual has tripled.

On the contrary, there has been little change in how Republicans perceive themselves in terms of religiosity or spirituality, with 61 percent identifying as religious (compared to 62 percent in 1999) and 28 percent as spiritual (compared to 25 percent two decades ago).
Independent voters have seen modest shifts, as 32 percent identify as spiritual (down from 37 percent) and 21 percent as neither religious nor spiritual (up from 13 percent).
In total, 47 percent of Americans identify as religious, 33 percent as spiritual but not religious, and two percent as both. Notably, 18 percent consider themselves neither, which is twice the proportion recorded in Gallup's initial survey in 1999.
The report highlights that the decline in religious identification aligns with trends seen in other Gallup measures of religiosity and religious practices, particularly over the past two decades. This period has witnessed steeper declines in formal religious practices such as church attendance and membership than in beliefs in God and prayer.
Another Gallup poll from June 2022 found that belief in God had notably declined, particularly among young adults and those leaning left politically. The groups experiencing the most significant declines in belief in God included liberals, young adults, and Democrats, while conservatives and married adults saw minimal changes.
Similarly, a Wall Street Journal poll in March indicated that although 49 percent of respondents believed in God without doubts, only 39 percent considered religion to be "very important" to them. This shift has been particularly pronounced among younger respondents and Democrats.
Gallup conducted the survey between July 3-27, with 1,015 U.S. adults participating, and reported a margin of sampling error of ± four percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level.
