Dear John,
The theme for Pope Francis’ message for today’s World Day of Migrants and Refugees reminds us that the decision to leave one’s home should be a free choice. But this isn’t the case for millions of our sisters and brothers affected by climate change.
In our own country, we’ve seen communities destroyed and thousands of people displaced by wildfires, record flooding and hurricanes. Around the world, families with even fewer resources struggle to survive in the face of more frequent and severe weather events. It’s predicted that climate change could displace more than a billion people by 2050—less than 30 years away.
Our faith calls us to act.
