Dear John,
Today, Christopher Luxon and I announced National's plan to
accelerate New Zealand.
Under the guise of safety, Labour has exposed its anti-car ideology
by cutting speeds on many highways from 100 km/h to 80km/h and cutting
local roads from 50km/h to 30/kmh.
National will repeal and replace these rules.
National will:
- Return many state highways to 100 km/h from 80, and many local
roads to 50 km/h from 30 - where it is safe to do so
- Ensure new highways are 110 km/h - especially Transmission Gully
and the Kapiti Expressway
- Require contractors to minimise the use of temporary speed limit
reductions at road maintenance sites at times when workers are
off-site and risks to motorists are mitigated
- Require reduced variable speed limits around schools during pick
up and drop off times.
All around the country, Labour has cut speeds on many highways from
100 km/h to 80 by ignoring economic impacts including travel times,
and by giving insufficient weight to road users’ and local
communities’ views.
We will make changes that ensure economic impacts – including
travel times - and the views of road users and local communities
count, alongside ensuring safety.
We will also encourage Police to increase the use of breath testing
and we will fix roadside drug testing legislation so Police can
effectively test drivers for drugs.

Only a PARTY VOTE FOR
NATIONAL can change the government and get our
country back on track.
Thank you, Simeon Brown
National's Spokesperson for
Transport
