John, I want to share a photo with you:
Yup, that's me! I'm with my two youngest sons, Israel and Robert, visiting the bust of my great-great-grandfather, Civil War hero and U.S. representative Robert Smalls.
(As you can tell from my stylish outfit and mustache, it was a while ago.)
The mustache might have been a regrettable choice, but here's what I'll never regret: Teaching my kids about our country's history. ALL of it – the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Robert Smalls was born enslaved, but his life story is one of perseverance, bravery, and achieving the impossible.
Ron DeSantis and the pro-censorship crowd have it backward. Understanding American history is patriotic. Erasing our history is cowardice.
That's why I was proud to serve as the first President and CEO of the International African American Museum in Charleston, and why I'm committed to telling my great-great-grandfather's story in every way I can.
When we win this race next year, we’ll send a strong message to every MAGA politician who wants to muzzle teachers, mislead students, and rewrite history that their time is over.
But first, we have to raise the funds needed to reach every voter in this swing district! Please, if you're able, pitch in to support our campaign – let's stand up for truth and freedom at this critical time in our history.

Thank you so much,
– Michael
