Dear John,
Last Sunday, with great fanfare and weeks of buildup, NBC debuted Kristen Welker as the new host of its flagship weekly news program, “Meet the Press.”
And who was the first guest they had on to mark the occasion? Donald Trump — the liar-in-chief who hadn’t appeared on the show since the insurrection of January 6, 2021.
As anyone could have predicted, Trump spent the interview repeating one dangerous lie after another, talking over Welker, and making a complete mockery of the entire proceedings.
But the sad reality is that the mainstream media will keep putting Trump on, despite the lies, because he's good for ratings, truth and democracy be damned. It’s up to us to counter and debunk his false claims by reaching voters directly through social media — and the team at Inequality Media Civic Action has spent the last year scientifically testing the most effective messages to counter Trump’s lies.
Now we just need the resources to get our proven-effective videos out to the millions of key voters who need to see them. Will you make a donation to help educate the public and debunk Trump’s lies?
After January 6, 2021, it seemed like maybe, just maybe, the media had learned the lesson that you simply cannot give an insurrectionist like Donald Trump free airtime.
Fat chance.
We have seen this over and over again. As recently as May, Trump chewed CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins to pieces at a misbegotten town hall. On “Meet the Press,” Kristen Welker tried to counter Trump’s lies, but she failed miserably. His lies kept gushing too quickly. NBC News posted a “fact check” online after the broadcast, but at a mere 1,800 words, it couldn’t possibly correct the record adequately.
Almost none of the lies Trump told were new. He’s been spouting most of them nonstop for years. How could Welker be so unprepared to address them head on? Because it's impossible to address so many lies coming so fast, one after the next.
Worse yet, the media then compounds the problem by obsessing about Joe Biden's age in order to provide “balance” in their coverage.
To keep Trump out of the White House and save our democracy, we must bypass the mainstream media filter and contact voters directly. Inequality Media Civic Action has built a huge following across social media to do just that, and our team of writers, artists, and videographers has scientifically tested the most effective and persuasive messages to debunk Trump’s lies.
With your help, we can counter Trump's disinformation and inoculate the public against his lies. Please make a donation to Inequality Media Civic Action. Every dollar counts.
Thanks for joining with us in the fight for democracy,
Robert Reich
