Rep. Rashida Tlaib and I are speaking out about attacks on our right to protest, which we’re seeing escalate with a shocking crackdown on #StopCopCity activists.

In recent months, Georgia officials have charged over 100 nonviolent activists with domestic terrorism and racketeering. And a SWAT team violently arrested people who’d been acting within their rights to coordinate a bail fund.

This is massive government overreach to silence dissent and criminalize protest. We cannot allow it.

But Rashida Tlaib and I are some of the only national lawmakers speaking out about this. We’re calling for accountability and justice for Tortuguita, the #StopCopCity activist who was murdered by police. And we’re defending activists’ First Amendment rights to free speech and assembly.

We also need to overhaul our systems of public safety, because there shouldn’t be more money going toward militarizing the police in the first place (which is the plan for Cop City). In Congress, Rashida and I are leading the push for policy solutions to keep our communities safe from police violence.
