A Relic of the Past
If you've turned on the TV recently, you surely know we're in election craziness season. Everyone seems to be running for President, and everyone seems to be spending a lot of money on their campaigns as a way to become a celebrity.

What you may not know is that right now, more than $350 million is sitting in an outdated, unused fund that allows failing presidential candidates to use taxpayer money to fund their campaigns.

The fund, called the Presidential Election Campaign Fund, draws money from a check-off program you may have seen on your tax return.
But the fund hasn't been used by a successful candidate in 16 years, and since then, has spent more than $100 million on losing candidates. This is insane.

That's why earlier this week Rep. Gallagher introduced the ELECT Act, a bill that would eliminate this fund and redirect the millions of unused dollars towards something productive: paying down our ever-growing debt. Click here to watch a video on Fox 11 about the bill.

Rep. Gallagher's friend Senator Joni Ernst, who introduced this bill in the Senate, equated the fund to nothing more than a "welfare program for politicians." See her tweet below ⬇️

The Presidential Election Campaign Fund is nothing more than a welfare program for politicians. Thanks @RepGallagher for joining my efforts to end this unnecessary program & #MakeEmSqueal! https://t.co/pJq2exS6i6

It's really common sense: taxpayers shouldn't have to foot the bill for failing Presidential campaigns. It's time to end this fund for good and use these millions to pay down our debt.
