Friend, this is a major step in treating gun violence as the public health crisis that it is.

(L-R): Brady Chief Programs and Policy Officer Christian Heyne and Brady Board Chair and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Joseph Sakran at the White House.

Just yesterday, I joined President Joe Biden, survivors, and activists at the White House as the Biden-Harris Administration announced a new federal Office of Gun Violence Prevention. This first-of-its-kind office will change how the federal government responds to the public health epidemic of gun violence that kills tens of thousands of Americans each year.

My name is Dr. Joseph Sakran, the chair of Brady’s board of directors and chief medical officer, and the creation of this office is personal for me.
This week 29 years ago, I was just 17 years old when a .38 caliber bullet ripped through my throat and ruptured my windpipe after a high school football game. This tragedy wasn’t easy to overcome, and it changed the trajectory of my life. It inspired me to go to medical school and led to me becoming a trauma surgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD.

I see the first-hand impacts of this crisis daily, friend. Already this year, our country has experienced over 500 mass shootings and gun violence is the number one killer of our children.

Tackling this crisis will take a whole-government approach, and that’s why I’ve worked toward the creation of this office for years. A federal Office of Gun Violence Prevention will give the federal government the tools and resources it needs to tackle our nation’s pressing gun violence epidemic through a coordinated, comprehensive approach.

We at Brady have worked hard to get to this moment — and I’m excited to say, we have succeeded. Will you join me in thanking President Biden for his bold leadership and giving this public health crisis the attention it deserves? We couldn’t have gotten here without his administration, so please show your support today! [[link removed]]

URGENT: Help Expand Brady Background Checks!

In addition to creating the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, President Biden recently used his executive authority to issue a rule that, if put into effect, would be the broadest expansion of firearm background checks in decades.

The rule aims to clarify the definition of what it means to be “engaged in the business” of selling firearms. A clear definition will ensure that individuals selling firearms for profit will have to conduct background checks, which moves us as close as possible to universal background checks without the urgently needed Congressional action.

Today, 1 in 5 guns are sold WITHOUT a Brady Background Check through private sales at gun shows and on thriving online gun marketplaces, which means that at least 20% of the firearms sold in the United States could go to people legally prohibited from possessing a gun — and no one would ever know.

We need this rule NOW more than ever. Will you show your support by signing our petition to the Department of Justice? We have less than 90 days to show support, so please take action now!
