Dear Friends,
It's been a busy week for my office in both Illinois and Washington, D.C. We have a lot to celebrate, including significant infrastructure announcements, a Government and Community Resource Fair, and the introduction of my new comprehensive maternal mortality legislation, the CARE For Moms Act.
Matteson Government and Community Resource Fair
I was delighted to see so many people attend my Government and Community Resource Fair in Matteson. As your representative in Congress, I strive to inform our communities about the availability of these critical resources.
New $1.25 Climate Investment in IL-02
Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, IL-02 will receive $1.25M for urban tree planting. This critical climate investment will substantially increase urban tree cover, boost equitable access to nature, and tackle the climate crisis. I joined USDA Undersecretary Homer Wilkes and officials from across our state to celebrate this announcement.
The CARE For Moms Act: A Comprehensive Solution to Our Nation's Maternal Mortality Crisis
I introduced my new comprehensive maternal mortality bill, the CARE For Moms Act, which supports the maternal health workforce, promotes access to prenatal and postpartum care, and provides the resources that moms and babies need to thrive.
My CARE For Moms Act includes the following provisions:
- Establish a State-Based Perinatal Quality Collaborative Grant Program.
- Establish Regional Centers of Excellence to tackle implicit bias and promote cultural competence among health professionals.
- Support federal efforts to grow and diversify the doula workforce.
- Extend Medicaid coverage for postpartum mothers in all 50 states.
- Establish grants for Rural Obstetric Mobile Units.
- Require 90-day prior notification to HHS for hospital obstetric unit closures.
- Extend Medicaid and CHIP to Oral Health Coverage to pregnant and postpartum women.
- Extend WIC benefits for postpartum and breastfeeding women for two years.
- Require HHS to produce a report on federal funding allocation for maternal health needs.
The reality is that too many moms, and particularly Black moms, are losing their lives. That's why I’m pushing for change, supporting providers, and providing resources like mobile units and doulas. My goal is clear: to ensure that every mother has access to the care, empowerment, and resources necessary to be the best moms they can be. Robin L. Kelly Member of Congress
