Major news: This week, Rep. Terri Sewell reintroduced the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act!
If Congress finally passes this landmark voting rights legislation, it would enshrine into law some of the necessary mechanisms for defeating discriminatory voting practices, now and in the future.
How? By updating and strengthening the critical preclearance protections of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that the Supreme Court has stripped away over the last decade, and by preventing states from enacting discriminatory voting rules. It would require the federal government to review any voting changes proposed by states with a history of racial discrimination.
This legislation is needed now more than ever. In the past decade, at least 29 states have passed almost 100 laws that make it harder to vote — with the burden falling hardest on voters of color.
It’s time to raise our voices and get this bill over the finish line so we can protect the freedom to vote.
