Daily Docket — Friday, Sept. 22

Here are some recent updates.

  • The Mississippi Supreme Court unanimously struck down part of a new anti-democratic law that would have allowed a white official to appoint four unelected judges to a Hinds County court that oversees Jackson, which is over 80% Black.

  • The North Carolina Legislature passed Senate Bill 749, which would give the Republican-controlled Legislature the power to appoint members to state and county boards of election instead of the governor. The bill awaits Gov. Roy Cooper's (D) promised veto.

  • A Pennsylvania court ordered Delaware County to count three voters' provisional ballots from the May municipal primary. The voters cast the provisional ballots after their mail-in ballots were canceled.

  • Five Republican members of the Wisconsin Assembly circulated an impeachment resolution against the state’s top election official, Meagan Wolfe. This follows the Senate's allegedly illegal vote to remove Wolfe from office last week, which is now being challenged by the state’s attorney general in court.

    • On today's new episode of Defending Democracy, Assembly Minority Leader Greta Neubauer (D) joins to break down the Wisconsin GOP's anti-democratic attempts to remove Wolfe and Justice Janet Protasiewicz. Listen on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.

Here’s what to expect coming up.

  • In Alabama, the special master, who has been tasked with drawing a new congressional map, must submit a map proposal by Monday in the state’s ongoing congressional redistricting litigation in Allen v. Milligan.

  • Next week, the North Carolina Legislature will be holding three public hearings across the state as map drawing begins again in the Tar Heel state. See if there's a hearing near you to attend
