John,
Have you heard about the crackdown on #StopCopCity activists in Georgia? It’s outrageous, and relevant for all of our movements.
Many community members oppose plans to build a massive complex just outside of Atlanta, where police would practice suppressing protests and using military tactics to target civilians. Activists have been calling this oppressive plan “Cop City.”
As part of a dangerous campaign to silence dissent and criminalize protest, Georgia officials have charged over 100 nonviolent activists with domestic terrorism and racketeering. Recently, a SWAT team violently arrested people who’d been acting within their rights to coordinate a bail fund in support of #StopCopCity protesters.
I’ve been joining with my sister in service, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, to speak out about these unacceptable violations of constitutional rights.
We’re asking other national leaders to join us in defending activists’ right to protest our government. We’re calling for accountability: The Department of Justice must investigate the police murder of forest defender Tortuguita, the cover-up of their killing, and the deprivation of protesters’ civil rights.
Rashida and I understand how urgently we must protect our First Amendment rights to free speech and assembly. We were activists before serving in Congress, and we have experienced police violence against protesters marching in defense of Black lives in Ferguson and Detroit.
We’re also pushing for policy solutions to fix our broken criminal legal system and keep our communities truly safe -- which includes safety from police violence.
We’ve championed legislation to invest in the basic needs of our communities, fund public health alternatives to policing, reduce prison and jail populations, end solitary confinement, support families harmed by police violence, decriminalize drugs, expunge past drug convictions, expand our civil rights laws, and more.
Can you split a donation today to both of our campaigns, so Rashida and I can keep urgently defending our rights and pushing for true public safety?
If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your secure donation will go through immediately, split evenly between Cori Bush and Rashida Tlaib:
Thank you for your support in this shared work to build a safer, more just world.
With love,
Cori
