Hope Lives On

In classic rhino fashion, Najin and Fatu spend their days grazing on long savanna grasses, wallowing in mud, and dozing in the shade of acacia trees. Beneath the warm Kenyan sun, their lives are those of typical rhinos–except in one grave, notable way. They’re the last of their kind–the only two northern white rhinos left on Earth.

By themselves, this mother-daughter duo won’t be able to save their species. Luckily, they’re not alone. Together with scientists, partners, and allies around the world, we’re forging a path forward for rhinos through our Wildlife Biodiversity Bank. Here, hope lives on in our Frozen Zoo®, where 12 genetically diverse, living northern white rhino cell lines are carefully cryopreserved. These cells hold the key to helping this iconic species recover–opening the door for assisted reproduction and genetic rescue efforts, including cloning.

With you by our side, we’re getting closer to unlocking this frozen potential every day. Join us today, as we celebrate World Rhino Day, and discover all you make possible for rhinos across the globe. Plus, tune into our podcast, Amazing Wildlife, for the inside scoop on rhino conservation, and the science and technology behind it all.

EYES ON THE ‘IO

Soaring across the skies of a single island, the 'io of Hawai’i is a culturally revered local hawk species found nowhere else on Earth. Yet surprisingly little is known about these birds of prey, and with ongoing threats, including climate change and habitat loss, a better understanding is needed to protect them. Alongside our partners, we’re finding solutions–and they happen to fit conveniently in bird-sized backpacks. Explore how together we’re safeguarding the future for the ‘io, and helping technology take flight with solar-powered GPS transmitters.

TOGETHER FOR MAUI

A short skip up the Hawaiian archipelago, we’re working to save other unique and vulnerable native birds at the Maui Bird Conservation Center. During last month’s devastating wildfires, our team took heroic action to protect the birds in our care. We’re endlessly grateful that all team members and birds at the center are safe, and for all the support you’ve given as we repair and rebuild in the aftermath. Our hearts and thoughts continue to be with the people of Maui, and we invite you to join us in supporting our community as the island begins to recover.
