In classic rhino fashion, Najin and Fatu spend their days grazing on long savanna grasses, wallowing in mud, and dozing in the shade of acacia trees. Beneath the warm Kenyan sun, their lives are those of typical rhinos–except in one grave, notable way. They’re the last of their kind–the only two northern white rhinos left on Earth.
By themselves, this mother-daughter duo won’t be able to save their species. Luckily, they’re not alone. Together with scientists, partners, and allies around the world, we’re forging a path forward for rhinos through our Wildlife Biodiversity Bank. Here, hope lives on in our Frozen Zoo®, where 12 genetically diverse, living northern white rhino cell lines are carefully cryopreserved. These cells hold the key to helping this iconic species recover–opening the door for assisted reproduction and genetic rescue efforts, including cloning.
With you by our side, we’re getting closer to unlocking this frozen potential every day. Join us today, as we celebrate World Rhino Day, and discover all you make possible for rhinos across the globe. Plus, tune into our podcast, Amazing Wildlife, for the inside scoop on rhino conservation, and the science and technology behind it all.
